Someone asked me a couple of days ago if they started coach training with The Coaching Guild in early 2024 if I believed they could quit their day job and replace their six figure income in accounting with a coaching practice before the year ends -and I told them no.
Someone else told this person something different. So, they decided to skip the training and join a 10k mastermind program to help them build a practice. When I suggested I didn't think this was a great idea, they told me they didn't want that negativity in their life and immediately blocked me. This goal of the group was to launch a six figure practice in six months - and here are my thoughts on that...
A career accountant has no business being a coach in six months with nothing but marketing training. Period. End of story. Coaching requires training, skills, and experience. This is the hill I will die on.
The closest adjacent field to life coaching is therapy. In order to be a therapist you will invest in 5-7 years of college education, plus likely a year or more of supervised practice before they can even begin to build a practice. For a therapist it might take anywhere from a year to four years of work to build a full and sustainable practice AND they know this. No one is selling a six month shortcut to big bucks for therapists.
It's irresponsible to think a coach should or even could shortcut to booked and blissful in six months. That kind of thinking breaks hearts and bank accounts. It is also unfair to would-be clients who assume coaches meet certain standards of training for practice.
But...
And this is a big one-if you're not living the dream and you want to be a coach or anything else for that matter, there is no time like the present to start.
A lot of people will derail their dreams because they are afraid they won't see overnight success, only to find themselves a decade or two later wondering why they feel disillusioned and stuck.
Do I think someone could start their training with The Coaching Guild now and leave their traditional job behind at some point next year?
Maybe. Depending on the person, that is a bet I might take and feel good about.
The human brain almost always overestimates what can be accomplished in a year AND wildly underestimates what can be done in 2-3 years. Whatever your next thing might be, whether it's coaching or it's something else, START NOW and do it in a way where you will love the journey. You’re going to be in the journey phase for quite awhile and that’s where the magic is.
