There’s a lot of hype about the income potential in coaching, and while many coaches do make good money, that’s not the most interesting motivation. Owning your own time and what you can do with it is where it’s at.
Many feel trapped in a cycle of work and family responsibilities, often struggling with guilt over not having enough time or energy for either. Coaching has broken that cycle for me, offering a way to live more freely and meaningfully.
I've had the time to work on campaigns for causes and people I believe in. I spent six years working as a coach and running an organization that supported some of the most challenging to help homeless people in our community. I took more than a year to run a statewide campaign for police reform AND continued to build my coaching practice. I have worked with countless political campaigns in organizational roles. These things take time, and I was able to give it. Whether it's advocating for social change or supporting grassroots initiatives, coaching has enabled me to dedicate significant energy to these passions.
One of the most precious gifts coaching has given me is time with my child. I've had the flexibility to homeschool him, be there for every milestone, and nurture our relationship in ways that traditional work schedules simply don't allow. I don’t do it all by myself. I have had plenty of support along the way. However, neither of my boys spent a day in daycare because of my career, and I am grateful for the space coaching created in my life to be able to do that.
Coaching also provided me the time and flexibility to take care of my aging parents in their final years. We had so much support along the way on that journey. However, I was able to make the time to create memories and be there in any emergency. Had I had traditional employment during the years my parents lived with us, I would have lost my job. Being present for them, providing support, and cherishing those moments are opportunities I wouldn't have had in a conventional job.
Balancing my coaching practice with community service has been seamless. I've been able to dive into local causes without compromising my professional commitments, fostering a sense of fulfillment and purpose. Moving away from the U.S. to live in an entirely different culture, being able to make time and space to be a part of the community in meaningful ways has been incredibly important. Coaching allows us to live anywhere we can get internet, and it has allowed us to be a part of our new community in ways that make a difference because I can make myself available when I am really needed.
Coaching has allowed me to build a life with layers of depth and impact. It's not just about earning a living; it's about living fully and authentically. I'm creating a legacy, aligning my work with my values, and making a difference every single day.
Coaching isn't just a career—it’s a path to a richly fulfilling life. If you're searching for a profession that offers true freedom and the chance to make a meaningful impact, coaching might be your answer.
